Figure 2: A specimen of Vespa crabro (aka European hornet). ![]() It is a very large wasp (2.5-3.5 centimetres), but much smaller than a northern giant hornet. This species was accidentally introduced into eastern North America more than 160 years ago and today it is common in parts of Ontario. The European hornet, Vespa crabro, is regularly mistaken for the northern giant hornet. Here are the most commonly reported species that are confused for the northern giant hornet. Some wasps can grow longer and thinner and others are large but have different and distinct features on their body. Northern giant hornets may be confused with other species of wasps and insects that are present in Ontario. Northern giant hornets are not present in Ontario, and it is unknown if they can survive Ontario winters. The abdomen has alternating yellow/orange and brown bands encircling it. Northern giant hornets have large yellow/orange heads with black eyes.
